As we explore ancient civilizations we should start to see patterns of human behaviour and development repeat themselves. Keeping in mind the course themes of
Beliefs and Values,
Daily Life and
Power and Authority search the news for items that link to ancient civilizations.
Make a comment that includes:
- a link to your news item
- a summary of your news item
- a description of how it links to ancient civilizations and fits the course themes
Think big picture. For example a news item on the border crossing between Mexico and the United States such as
this can be linked to the building of protective walls throughout civilizations such as Hadrian's Wall or the Great Wall of China.

ReplyDeletethis article discusses the act of racism in Canada. that the number of people in Canada witness racism acts or hear racial slurs being said on the street or wherever they may hear it. the highest rate is in BC, followed by Ontario, Alberta and Saskatchewan. the results were obtained by an internet survey taken by 1500 adults around the country.
this links to what we have been doing in the course because it discusses the diffrent civilizations hate against eachother. people dont say racial slurs towards their own race. it just doesnt happen. but with this survey, it shows that the hate between diffrent peoples is still sort of there, just not to the extent of killing eachother...usually.

ReplyDeleteThis articale discusses the growing tension between rival countries in the middle east. Most of tension arises from long held traditions that they enforce with an almost religious zeal. Such as the incident of an emissary being made to sit lower than another man from their enemies side. Such things are detrimental to society as a whole since it offers a variety of polite ways to insult many people. They had their use back then but now they fan the flames of war.

ReplyDeleteThe world chocolate wonderland opened in Beijing and made little chocolate Terracotta Warriors to be given away as prizes during the weekend. The Terracotta Warriors are one of their most popular exibits since the actual Warriors are a very popular part of China, and are a very important tourist attraction. They consist of over 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses. Many people still believe that there is more buried in the pits.

http://www.newser.com/story/85178/zuma-scrambles-to-defuse-racial-tensions.html
ReplyDeleteThis story is about the current racial tensions in South Africa, concerning the 2010 World Cup. The President, Jacob Zuma is scrambling to solve the racial tensions in South Africa, as a White Supremacist leader was killed by his black employees. Zuma says that this act of murder is a declaration of war, which is why he is warning the soccer teams to stay away from South Africa, for their own safety.
This relates to the comp civ course as it is a clear example of racial tensions, which have existed for centuries and still remain today. In the news we hear about racial tension between white supremacists and african people all the time, it doesn't seem out of the ordinary. However, I find it very frightening that the President, Zuma, has stated that the killing of the White supremacist leader, is a "declaration of war." Right now, it seems that this statement could very likely be accurate, due to the controversy of the situation. This article is an example of the human need for superiority at any cost.

ReplyDelete"In an unprecedented diplomatic show, the Russian and Polish prime ministers on Wednesday honored 22,000 Poles murdered 70 years ago by Soviet forces in the Katyn Forest."
Throughout time racial conflicts have always come about, the Soviets are just now apologizing for a horrific slaughter that occurred seventy years ago. Genocides have happened in every corner of the globe, and its always repeats itself in the nation at fault finally apologizing several years after the fact. "Katyn remains a painful issue in Polish-Russian relations, which have often been tense since Poland shrugged off Soviet-style communism in 1989," whether or not the nation at fault apologizes there will always be tense feelings among the nations involved, you cannot erase history, and you cannot forget history, the best people can do is try to learn from in. Genocide of races still is a lesson to be learned however because it is still occurring to this day.

ReplyDeletethis article discusses the unrest in thailand over govenmental control and ideas. Groups have stormed the parlimentary compound, causing several strong political figures to escape via helicopter.
Civilizations have always been controlled by a heirarchy of power, whether through religion or monarchy. people have been given little to no power. when they get unhappy, they revolt. revolutions and overthrows of power are highly common throughout any history of any civilization.

The Olympics
ReplyDeleteWe have always wanted to show all the other countrys that we are better then them. With the olympics in Canada we have been bragging about it trying to show everyone that we can host the olympics and make it awesome. Back to when we were a colonie we always tried to be better then everyone else in the world. With the olympics in 2010 we showed our nations pride.
The olympics was used to be a cover up of how we are in debt and and to give it as a cover up as the resession. We have always looked for a way outa the hard times

ReplyDeleteMy news item that I have chosen is the construction of the site of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England. I have linked it with the colosseum located in Rome. They are similar because they show how people have been interested in viewing sports and athletic events for thousands of years. They both were/will be used as stadiums for athletes to compete and for spectators to watch.
The site of the 2012 olympics is currently still being worked on by 10,000 workers. The stadium will seat 80,000 and they believe it will be completed by christmas.

ReplyDeleteThis article talks about the multiple explosions in Baghdad which caused 35 deaths and 140 injuries, the target of these explosions is still undetermined.
The connection with this article and ancient civilizations is that violence and war has gone on for about as long as anyone can remember, the only difference is the technology between then and now.

ReplyDeleteThis Article discusses the new iPad. The iPad is the new ipod touch but more like a laptop. This organizes whatever you need. You can have pictures, day planner, adress book ect.. For the price of $600 bucks you can have your world inside a ipad.
I think this links to what we have been doing in this course because it is a totally new techology.I remember when the computer was a huge deal and compared to now where you can have a touch screen "laptop" its nothing. It just shows that we are still onto to bigger and better things.

ReplyDeleteThis article is giving information about the mudslide in Brazil that has killed about 200 people, approx. I find this relevent to camparative civilizations because every last civilization see's some sort of downfall, no matter what race it is in refrence to. All civilizations live to see tradegy and stuggle, and either rise or fall from it.

ReplyDeleteThis article is about how the Obama family is saying how the government needs more to combat use of illegal drugs in the country rather than just saying “it’s bad so don’t do it”. They recognized the fact that it has is a integral part of the black market in the country and says that there are many ways to combat it, and to keep an open mind about solutions. It tried to show that it doesn’t matter where you come from, your socioeconomic status, you can avoid drugs and become successful.
This relates to history because it is a message that has been spread across the world for centuries, “don’t do drugs”. Throughout history there have been many narcotics that have been used as recreational drugs whether it was tobacco, poppy seeds or morphine. At one point the government has always tried to combat it and stop use of it in it’s borders and has tried to keep it out of the country. This has been a theme since the time of the Romans. Since then there have been many attempts to stop the use and spread of drugs but it has thrived throughout the centuries. It seems as if this is a flaw that humans must have and will continue to be a part of humanity.

ReplyDeleteIn this article Egyptologist Zahi Hawass used a robot to peer into a narrow shaft that opens into the queen's chamber of the Great Pyramid. There were many doors sealed with limestone placed to protect something or someone of importance. It was one of the first major discoveries in the Great Pyramid in some 130 years.
This relates to history because people today are still trying to unlock the mistery behind these intrieging cultures, and discover artifacts that can be recorded in history. The Egytian chambers have survived many years and it brings their cultured time and ways close to ours for us to research and recieve an understanding of thier times.

ReplyDeleteThroughout history, it has been a common occurence that the indigineous peoples create gods in order to explain the natural world around them. In turn, these gods become the base for their civilization and is respected and revered by all who practice that particular faith.
South Park, as many people know, makes mock accusations about many differnt religions in order to produce a comical effect. Many practitioners of those religions just shrug about the rude humour, or maybe write an angry letter. But what about the people who practice and hold thier faith in a very strict light.
Regarding the latest episode, the creators of South Park have recieved some mail from Muslim extremists threatening their very lives! Of course we have all heard about the right to freedom in speech, but when does it become too much?
